Abstract

Retaining-bands for special closures.-The body of a tin for containing food stuffs is formed with an external flange 8 having an annular depression 9 adapted to be engaged by a somewhat smaller bead 11 on the flange 13 of the lid 7. The part 10 of the lid fits loosely on the body of the tin so as to allow gases to escape to the space between the parts 9, 11 when the tin and its contents are heated, thus preventing bulging of the lid. The flanges 8, 13 are embraced by a split seating-band 14, the ends 19 of which are formed with lugs 20, 23. The lug 20 has an extension 21, which is drawn through a hole in the lug 23, to tighten the band 14, and is then doubled over and soldered to the lug 20. To open the tin, the soldered joint is broken, thus enabling the sealing- band 14 to be removed.
