Abstract
1,230,830. Power factor correction. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Jan., 1970 [28 Nov., 1968], No. 56565/68. Heading H2H. A power factor arrangement comprises a circuit in shunt with a load connected to an A.C. supply, the circuit including a capacitor C and an inductance connected in parallel, the inductance being variable by means of switches associated therewith. The inductance may be a very high leakage transformer having a primary winding L connected in parallel with the capacitor C, the secondary winding L c having backto-back thyristors S1 S2 connected across it so that, by suitable operation of the thyristors the inductance of the transformer can be varied. If desired the operation of the thyristors may be made dependent on the load current of the system and furthermore a plurality of transformers or reactor windings, may be used in series, or a transformer having a plurality of secondary windings, each provided with the necessary switching means. The switching means may be operated in steps of ¢ cycle per step.
