Abstract
1,228,901. Packaging machine. SELFPACK VERPACKUNGS - UND VERTRIEBS G.m.b.H. 2 April, 1968 [5 March, 1968], No. 15838/68. Heading B8C. In a form-and-fill machine making squaredup liquid filled containers, the liquid supplied to the container being formed is adjustably throttled to avoid over-pressurizing as each container section is shaped. Throttling is obtained by restricting the liquid filled tube above the transverse welding dies. A web 3, Fig. 2, of pliable material e.g. coated paper filled with liquid 7 is fed between rollers mounted on supports 8, 9 and sealing dies 1, 2. The bottom rollers 10, 11 are separated by an adjustable gap 12 which restricts the quantity of liquid entering the tube below the dies as it is drawn downwardly between shaping plates 19, 20. Further shaping plates 21 at right angles to the plates 19, 20 move from the inactive position of Fig. 5 to the active position of Fig. 6. Two plates 22, coupled to plates 21 and each positioned, and offset at opposite sides of the plates 19, 20, rise to support and shape the bottom of the container 6 leaving a gap 24 to allow the seam 23 to protrude as shown. After filling, the dies 1, 2 move together and ribs 25 formed on their bases permit bulging to relieve excess pressure during sealing. The gap 12 can be adjusted by a spindle and nut device 16, 18 which pivots the support 9 about an axis 15. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4, not shown, the spindle and nut device is attached to the die 1. As the dies open the rollers (11<SP>1</SP>) are moved towards rollers (10<SP>1</SP>) to reduce the gap and the flow of liquid as the web is drawn downwardly. As the dies move together the rollers separate.
