Abstract

827,792. Packaging-machines. CELLOPHANE INVESTMENT CO. Ltd. July 26, 1957 [July 26, 1956], No. 23773/57. Class 94(1). A machine of the kind which folds a web to tubular form about a mandrel, passes material to be packaged through the mandrel into the tube and flattens and seals the tube at intervals to form packages, initially creases the web to assist folding and produces rectangular section filled bags with end closures of the kind usually associated with bellow side folds. A web 2 is fed towards a mandrel 8 by creasihg rolls 4, 5 which produce the pattern shown in Fig. V, the dotted lines indicating creases on the opposite side to those shown by full lines. The web is tubed about the mandrel 8 and the longitudinal seam heat sealed by a wheel 9. Plates 12, 13 cooperate with fluted mandrel sides to produce partial bellows folds, and a gumming device 14 places gum spots 15, 16 at positions where the tube is to be transversely sealed. These spots permit sealing in the case of paper or like tubes with only inner heat sealing linings. The tube passes between driven rollers 17, 18 and rollers, Fig. 11, (not shown), mounted on the mandrel which pull the tube along the mandrel. Alternatively porous belts 23, 24, Fig. VI, passing across suction heads 27, 28 may grip and pull the tube. Liquid or pasty material is fed by a pump 36 through a pipe 37 to the tube. Granular material may be fed in weighed quantities by means not specified. Heated blocks 42, 43 on belts 40, 41 seal the tube at intervals, and knives, Fig. VII (not shown), mounted in the blocks 42 are operated by a cam 60 to enter grooves in the blocks 43 and separate the packages. The packages drop from the belts 40, 41 and are fed at right angles to their initial direction by belts 70, 71 past gumming means 72 and fixed folding means, Figs. III, IV, (not shown), which apply adhesive to and fold over onto the package bottom their lower seam 69. Packages produced may be flat topped, or peak roofed as shown.
