675,073. Producing filled containers. RADO, L. July 12, 1950, No. 17444/50. Addition to 599,174. Class 94 (i). An improvement in or modification of the process for the production of filled containers of thermoplastic material described in the parent Specification, comprises heat-sealing the longitudinal, registering edges of two strips or a folded strip of thermoplastic material to .form a tube, sealing the end of the tube, filling it with a liquid or elastic material, applying lateral pressure at spaced points along the tube to displace the contents and cause the tube walls to make contact thereat and after each pressing operation generating heat by means of the pressing tools to weld together the contacting walls of the tube. The containers are then separated from the tube by cutting through the welds. As shown, strips 1 and 2 of polyviynl chloride are fed intermittently from supply rolls, and their superposed longitudinal edges welded together by pressing tools 3-3c, to which a high-frequency voltage is applied. After formation of the initial end seal 7, a quantity of liquid or paste exceeding that required for a single container is introduced into the tube through a pipe 11, the tube advanced one step and its walls pressed together to displace the filling by a pair of jaws, 6, 6b to which a high-frequency voltage is subsequentlyapplied to weld the contacting walls. The tools 3-3c and 6, 6b and the filling, mechanism are operated in synchronism with the feed of the strips, the length of the tools 3-3c. being greater than the distance by which the strips are advanced at each step so that the longitudinal welds overlap. The filling of the tube may be assisted by inclining the tube.
