Abstract

1,227,076. Descaling steel. MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K.K. April 25, 1969 [April 26, 1968], No.21375/69. Heading C7E. Chromium-containing steel is descaled by wetting its surface with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal compound which is capable of reacting with the scale in the presence of oxygen to form a coating of an alkali metal compound that is soluble in acid or water, subjecting the coated steel to a temperature which is higher than the melting point of the applied alkali metal compound in the presence of an oxygen containing atmosphere, and then washing the steel surface. The alkali metal compound which is applied may be NaOH or KOH or a compound which hydrolyses to give one of these, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , or Na or K silicate, and the solution of alkali metal compound, which is applied by dipping or spraying, may also contain an oxidizing agent such as Na NO 3 , KNO 3 , or NaClO 3 . The washing of the surface may be done with an inorganic acid such as HNO 3 , H 2 SO 4 or HF.
