Abstract

[Also in Division E2] A rear-view mirror assembly for vehicles includes a slow-releasable connection, between the mirror and the base by which it is secured to the vehicle, comprising a first part having an undercut head and a shoulder, and a second part of resilient plastics material having a socket for the head, the shoulder of which, in use, abuts or lies close to the mouth of the socket and constitutes with the mouth, a fulcrum about which the parts can rock to withdraw the head from the socket when the mirror receives a blow exceeding a predetermined value. As shown in Fig. 1, a rear view mirror 1 is carried on an arm 2 which terminates in a ball head 3 for releasable engagement with a socket 5 in a base 6 of plastics material. A flange 4 bears on the material surrounding the socket and the arm 2 rocks about a point on the periphery of the flange to force the ball head out of the socket when the mirror is struck a blow. In another arrangement, Figs. 2, 4, the mouth of the socket 5 is separated from a bearing portion 11 by an annular recess 12 and radial webs 13. A face 14 of the arm 2 constitutes a shoulder which bears on the portion 11 and includes an indexing projection 18 which engages a recess 19 on the base. The mouth of the cavity lies below the surface of the surrounding material. The arm 2 carries an adjustable steady 15 which is adapted to bear against a vehicle windscreen. According to Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the base is moulded with the ball head as an insert in a moulding die for the base and the head is secured to the arm (2) by a screw (21). In other arrangements, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the mouth of the socket lies substantially flush with an adjacent vehicle body part and in further arrangements, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the socket is surrounded by a metal skirt (30) by which the base is attached to the vehicle.
