1326740 Rear-view mirrors MAGNATEXLtd 26 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 52336/69 Heading B7J A safety rear-view mirror assembly for a vehicle comprises a mirror 1 carried at one end of a supporting arm 2 which has at its other end a shoulder in the form of a planar face 14 which abuts ribs 11a on a surface 11 of a body portion 9 of a base part 6, the face 14 surrounding, and being adjacent to, an undercut ballshaped head 3 located in a part-spherical socket cavity 5 in body portion 9 which has a mouth of smaller diameter than the ball-shaped head and is made of resilient plastics material so that it may flexibly release the head 3, the mirror assembly further comprising indexing means including a V-sectioned projection 18 on the face 14 which engages a V-sectioned recess 19 in the surface 11, thus providing two pairs of co-operating inclined surfaces such that when the mirror 1 receives a blow which turns the supporting arm 2 about an axis perpendicular to the mouth of the socket cavity 5 then, if the force of the blow exceeds a predetermined value, the co-operating surfaces of projection 18 and recess 19 will ride up upon each other and eventually disengage from one another, such disengagement being sufficient to cause withdrawal of the head 3 from the cavity 5. The mouth of the cavity 5 is separated from the surface 11 by an annular recess 12 interrupted by radial webs 13, the recess 19 having one end merging into the recess 12. The base part 6 has lugs 10 each having an aperture 7 for receiving screws to fix the base part 6 to a vehicle's header bar 8.
