A trainline coupler comprises yoke members 18 and 24 which pass around a gudgeon 8 connected to brackets 6 and 7 depending from a car coupler 3, with the yoke 24 passing through the end-plate 22 of yoke 18, the plate 22 and a projection 29 on yoke 18 being urged to contact a face 12 and depression 53, respectively, of the gudgeon, when the coupler is uncoupled, by a spring 35 retained between plate 22 and a further plate 32 mounted on a bolt 31 projecting through the end 26 of yoke 24, the coupler head 5 being swivelable to an out-of-use position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 about gudgeon 8 and retained in this position by projection 29 entering a further depression 54 on the gudgeon. When the coupler is coupled with a counter coupler the heads 5 will be held in contact with one another by springs 35 acting on plates 22 which will be forced back from faces 12 of the gudgeons. The train lines are releasably coupled tohead 5 so that they may be connected direct to another rail car if said other car has not a similar train line coupler. In a modified form of coupler (not shown) the spring is not under pretension and is loaded only during coupling by the movement rearwards of the yoke carrying the coupling head, it not being possible to move the other yoke forwardly.
