Abstract

1,217,859. Transducer and tool or fastener assembly. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. 27 Dec., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 58672/67. Heading B4C. An assembly comprises an element in the form of either a tool or a fastener and a resonant electromechanical transducer for impacting the element, and one of the transducer and element includes means for receiving a portion of the other such that the transducer and element are relatively movable. As illustrated in Fig. 1 the transducer 5 includes a horn 5 and a sleeve 7 in threaded engagement with the free end on the horn. The sleeve may be shrink or press fitted on the horn. A tool or fastener 6 is received in the recess defined by the horn and the sleeve for axial movement. Vibratory motion of the transducer, during use, inpacts the tool or fastener. In the embodiment of Fig. 2a, the tool includes a head 11c which engages with shoulder 7a to restrict axial movement. The shoulder may be provided by a rubber grommet (7d), (Fig. 2b, not shown) to permit removal and insertion of a tool without removing the sleeve. The means may be provided by a recess (12) (Fig. 3) not shown) in the tip of the horn or in a half-wave extension (15), (Fig. 3a, not shown). Fig. 4 shows the tip of the horn being received in a recess in a tool 16.
