[Also in Division B8] A filling apparatus comprises a storage cylinder 3 on an intermittently moving belt 34 and a transfer container 1, each hermetically sealed having covers with portions of perforable and retractable material of such a nature that, when gas pressure is supplied to the storage cylinder via a conduit and hollow needle which is made to pierce the retractable material, liquid from the cylinder 3 can be forced through a device consisting of a conduit 8 with a needle 5, 7 at each end when the end of the needle 5 is below the liquid level in the cylinder 3: each needle being able to be displaced translationally by actuators 4, 6 respectively into one of several positions. The transfer container 1 is filled with liquid when the needle 5 is below the liquid surface and the needle 7 is piercing the cover 2; filling ceases when the end of the needle 5 rises above the liquid level in the container 3, but with the needle still piercing the container 3 the transfer container 1 is supplied with pressurized gas. Liquid is delivered from the transfer container 1 to the containers 20 to be filled, on an intermittently moving belt 19, by a device similar in design and operation to that which has charged the transfer container 1. In this case the liquid flow is metered by the device 18 which on sensing the liquid operates an activator 13 to raise the needle 5, thereby allowing gas pressure to urge the liquid already in the needle and conduit into the container 20. A further device including a needle 10 is used to empty the container 1 when the requisite number of containers 20 have been filled. During the filling operations the needle 10 is either removed from the container 1 by the actuator 9 or the conduit 10<SP>1</SP> sealed by a valve 21. The actuators and the advancing of the belts 19 and 34 are all controlled by a sequential programme control circuit. Successive cylinders 31, 32 may contain sterilizing and washing liquids prior to the introduction of a further filling liquid. There may be several devices operating at the same time transfering liquid from the container 1 to a batch of the containers 20 to be filled.
