Abstract

839,207. Can openers; collapsible containers. ROBERTSHAW Ltd., M. F. Feb. 19, 1958 [Feb. 19, 1957], No. 5607/57. Class 66. [Also in Group XXII] A liquid filled container is opened and emptied by placing it in an apparatus that pierces it and applies axial pressure to one end to crush it. As shown a can 13 is moved through an opening 18 to a position beneath a hydraulically actuated piston 6 that presses the can and its supporting platform 10 downwards against spring pressure until the lower face of the can is pierced by a member 7. Further movement of the piston 6 crushes the can and expells the contents through a pipe 8. The piston then rises and the next can to be inserted pushes the crushed can 15 through an exit 5. The piercing members 18, 19 in the piston are connected through bores 20 and 21 to means for effecting aeration or gasification of the liquid as it is being expelled. A pusher member 14 may insert the cans automatically and may be controlled by the means controlling the piston 6.
