BARBET, EGROT & GRANGE, PINGRIS & MOLLET-FONTAINE. 15 Feb., 1968 [17 Feb., 1967], No. 7543/68. Heading A4C. [Also in Division B1] An apparatus for extracting liquid from heterogeneous materials such as a vegetable substance or a seed-containing fruit, preferably an apple, comprises a frame 1 supporting a longitudinal shaft 2 which is surrounded by a perforated cage 9, supported by metal hoops 10, through which the juice can escape, the apparatus having an inlet hopper 12 above the screw 3 and an unobstructed outlet 13 to collect the substance from which the liquid has been removed. The pressure generating screw 4 is fixed to and driven by shaft 2 which in turn is driven by gearwheels 5 and 6 and a motor (not shown). The feed screw 3 is supported to turn freely about the shaft 2 and is driven by a motor (not shown) and gearwheels 11. Preferably screw 4 has a constant pitch and a hub 8 whose diameter increases from inlet towards outlet; preferably the screw 3 has a constant pitch and is rotating in the opposite direction to screw 4. Alternatively the screw 4 may have a cylindrical hub and a pitch which increases from outlet towards inlet, or it may be of variable pitch and have a hub which increases in diameter from inlet towards outlet.
