Abstract
Malt soaked in a container 2, Fig. 1, by water issuing from nozzles 3 and stirred by a stirrer 5, is delivered by a feed roller 7 to bruising rollers 8, 9. The bruised malt is then mixed into sprays 25, 26 of mash liquor by at least one pair of vanewheel sets 16, 17, refer to Fig.3, and the resulting <FORM:1112730/C6-C7/1> mash is taken off by a pump 31. The vane-wheels, which are provided along the entire length of the gap between the squeezing rollers, are driven in opposite directions such that the parts of the vane-wheels are moving upwardly where they inter-engage. A variable drive may be provided for the vane-wheels. The vane-wheels may be rimless spoked wheels with the individual spokes forming the vanes, 20, or sheet metal discs from which the vanes have been formed by punching out.
