Abstract
1,207,695. Two stroke I.C. engines; valve gear. J.E. SQUELCH. March 21, 1969 [March 29, 1968], No.15142/68. Heading F1B. A two stroke engine has two, four or eight cylinders 12, 13, Fig. 1 in planes having an included angle less than 120 degrees, a valve bore 17 within the included angle parallel to the crank-shaft bore 15, a valve and compressor device (45), Fig. 3 (not shown) within the bore, ports (42, 43) in the bore for supplying compressed air-fuel mixture to the cylinders and a carburetter 54. The engine housing 10 may be a casting in one or more parts or made up by plates 9. The crank-shaft 16 may be formed in separate pieces with a sprocket and chain output drive 32, 34, 35. A starter 56 is mounted in cradle 57. An oil pump, distributer and water pump are chain or belt driven at the front end of the crank-shaft. The ports (42, 43) are controlled by pistons 45 moved by a member (45) which is reciprocated by rams (47) working in a cylinder (48) supplied by pressure oil. Mixture is supplied to bore 17 through a port (72). As member 46 is moved towards a piston (45) a gap (50) is closed to move the piston. Member (46) is then reversed to close the other gap (50) and move the other piston (45). Mixture is passed through the gap (50) which is open and on the next reversal this gap is closed and the mixture compressed by the piston (45) and forced through the ports (42, 43) into the working cylinder 12 or 13. The oil valve for feeding the rams may be a three piston arrangement driven from the crankshaft. A secondary choke of the carburetter may be linked to a vacuum diaphragm which is connected to a port in the bore 17 between pistons 45. The exhaust valve operating gear may be as described in Specification 1,207,694. Pistons 59 may be as described in Specification 1,207,064.
