Abstract

A mechanism for coupling a pin 8 supporting a load to be lifted, to a lifting bracket 1 suspended from lifting cables, comprises a cage 14 movable within a housing 6, between positions in which an enlarged head of the pin 8 is free to move into and out of the cage, and is held fast in the cage. To engage the pin 8 ready for lifting, the mechanism is guided down a tensioned rope 9 coupled to the pin 8, and the head thereof rides up into a socket in the cage 14 displacing pivoted toggle plates 17 outwardly. The weight of the housing 6 causes compression of a spring 19 whereby the cage 14 effectively rides up into the housing 6 until the plates 17 pivot inwardly under the enlarged pin head to prevent removal thereof. The plates 17 pivoted to the cage 14 act as wedges between the housing wall and the pin head, and support the pin and its load as the housing is lifted. To release the pin 8, a spring plunger 21 is manually set to automatically spring into a recess 24 in the cage 14, once the load has been set down and the cage rides up in the housing 6, the cage is positively held in the upper position and the plates 17 may be retracted to release the pin head once the housing is lifted.
