Abstract
1,203,244. Balancing grinding wheels. A. A. JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd., and J. HOULDSWORTH. 7 May, 1968 [15 April, 1967], No. 17421/67. Heading B3D. [Also in Division F2] A balancing unit for rotary bodies comprises a correcting mass 19 and means for adjusting the stress axially of the rotary body and angularly about its axis to balance the body during its rotation. As applied to a drive spindle 5 mounting a grinding wheel 7 the correcting means 19 is mounted on a worm-wheel 17 which rotates about a spindle 18 lying in a plane at right angles to the axis XX. An electric motor 14, supplied via brush 27 and lead 25, drives the worm-wheel through gearing 16 and worm 15. The latter assembly is mounted in a housing 10 which may be rotated about axis XX by an electric motor 20 driving, through gearing 21, a pinion 22 which meshes with internal gearing 24. Operation.-With the spindle 1 rotating motor 14 is energized to rotate mass 19 to move it axially of the spindle into any position in which it is not on axis XX (i.e. the position shown in broken lines). Motor 20 is then energized to rotate the mass about axis XX until a first minimum vibration position is attained, the vibrations being transmitted via a pick-up 29 and an amplifier 30 to vibration meter 31. Motor 14 is again energized until a second minimum vibration level is detected. The position of the mass 19 may be detected electrically by devices 32, 36 and displayed at 35. The balancing may be effected automatically by an electrical control system (not described). The brushes 27, 28, 34, 38 may consist of a single or multi-brush assembly.
