Abstract

1,197,710. Vehicle interior rear view mirror. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 21 June, 1969, No. 31471/69. Heading B7J. A motor vehicle comprises an interior rear view mirror assembly 7 having a stem 9 which extends through an aperture 11 in a header bar 3 and which is attached by a breakaway mechanism 17-27 to the side of the bar remote from the driver compartment so that when the mirror 14 is struck, the stem 9 is detached from the header bar 3. The header bar 3 extends transversely of the vehicle and is attached to a sheet metal roof panel 1 at its forward end. The breakaway mechanism comprises a ball 17 fixed to the end of the stem 9 held in a socket 23 on a casing 19 attached to the bar 3 by a resiliently deformable clamping plate 21. The ball 17 has a projection 29 which extends through a hole in the socket, and when the mirror 14 is struck, the ball 17 rocks about the point of contact 30 between the edge of the hole and the projection, deforming and breaking free from the clamping plate 21 which removes a decorative cover 15 of plastics material covering the aperture 11. The stem 9 and hall 17 are then free to fall out of the header bar 3.
