1,183,043. Making packages. E. S. & A. ROBINSON Ltd. 15 Feb., 1967 [16 Feb., 1966], No. 20484/69. Divided out of 1,183,042. Heading B8C. The subject-matter includes that of Specification 1,183,042 except the modification of the hollow head 12 illustrated in Fig. 9 of that Specification. The claims of the present Specification are directed primarily to a method of and a machine for packaging articles in a carton comprising positioning a carton blank with one panel adjacent the mouth of a die, placing the articles on the panel, supporting the panel and the articles by means movable within the die, applying pressure to the articles, passing the blank and articles into the die to erect the carton, removing the carton and articles from the die, and returning the panel supporting means through the die to the mouth of the die. The present Specification discloses also a modification of the supporting means described in Specification 1,183,042. The platform (38) is replaced by pivoted arms (not shown) having supports bearing upon the bottom of the carton. As the carton descends through the die (26), the arms retract and deposit it upon a transport device 46 mounted on vertically reciprocable plungers 56. A chain conveyer 58 moves horizontally between the plungers 56 and has lugs 60 which engage and transport the carton when the device 46 has moved below the conveyer.
