Abstract
714,267. Filling machines. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Sept. 4, 1552 [Sept. 28, 1951], No. 22647/51. Class 94 (1) [Also in Group V] In a method of, or machine for filling containers with plastic substances, e.g. ice-cream, containers are fed intermittently in spaced succession into register with a filling nozzle from which a rod of plastic substance is continuously extruded at a predetermined rate, a relative movement towards each other is brought about between the nozzle and the container in register therewith to cause the end of the extruding rod to pass into the container and a further relative movement away from each other is then brought about between the nozzle and container at substantially the same rate as that of extrusion of the rod so that there is substantially no relative movement between the container and extruding rod for a given period, and, portion of the extruding rod thus positioned in the container is severed therefrom during that period. Cups 11 are fed along a platform 12 between side guides 13 by an intermittentlymovable chain conveyer 14 having spaced pockets constituted by pairs of wall members 15 arranged to pass through a slot 16 in the platform. Above the conveyer is a nozzle 17 from which a rod 18 of ice-cream is continuously extrcded, the rate of extrusion being such that a charge of ice-cream appropriate to the size of the cups is extruded during each combined movement and dwell of the conveyer. After a cup has been positioned beneath the nozzle. it is raised by a reciprocating bifurcated plunger 21 so that the end of the rod is spaced a short distance from its base and is then lowered on to the platform at a rate equal to that of the extrusion. During the lowering movement a charge is severed from the rod by a pair of opposed wires 26 (see Group V) arranged to move transversely of the rod and at the same time move with the rod at extrusion rate during the severing operation.
