During insertion of a plug connector, Fig. 1, into a socket connector, Fig. 2, camming surfaces 27 on the plug body slide along longitudinal ribs 24 on the socket body, so holding rows of contacts 15, 21 in spaced relation until the insertion is complete when the cams 27 fit into recesses 28 to bring respective contacts 15, 21 into engagement. Co-operation of further pairs of cam surfaces 31, 32 and 30, 33 causes firm engagement of the contacts. The ribs 24 define between them a groove 23 in which the row of contacts 21 is located, longitudinal ribs 19 on the plug body similarly defining a groove 20 for the contacts 15. Each contact comprises a contact stud 15, 21 mounted in an insulating body 16, one row of contact studs, as shown, the studs 15, being spring- loaded. Twin-core cables 35 from thermocouples in a nuclear reactor enter a cable grip 37 in the socket, the cables being divided at seals 38 into separate cores which are connected to individual contacts 21. A multi-core input cable of the plug has a stress-bearing core 43 with a head 44. The reactor gas coolant enters the socket, which is used vertically, between louvres 40, passes through apertures 41 and through the channel defined by the ribs 19, 24, and leaves through the recess 25.
