Abstract

1,166,775. Fire - retardant compositions. UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP. 17 May, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 23745/68. Headings C3B and C3P. A composition comprises an organic resin in which is dispersed a fire retardant amount of particles of at least one borate selected from lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and ammonium borates having an average particle size of from 0.1 to 25 microns. Preferred borates are hydrated sodium borates having a Na 2 O: B 2 0 3 molar ratio of no more than 0.5. Antimony oxide and a chlorinated organic compound may also be included. In the examples were used: an unsaturated polyester prepared from polypropylene glycol, isophthalic and maleic acids, dissolved in styrene and containing t.-butylcatechol, cobalt octoate and methyl ethyl ketone; polyvinyl chloride plastisol with dioctyl phthalate and an epoxy resin prepared from epichlorohydrin and tris-(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol; borax (decahydrated sodium tetraborate), borax/boric acid, Na 2 O: B 2 O 3 hydrated sodium borate of empirical formula Na 2 B 8 O 13 and ammonium biborate; antimony oxide, chlorinated paraffin wax and a fluoborate stabilizer.
