Abstract
1,267,240. Alumina containing resin composition. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 4 June, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 28222/69. Headings C3B, C3P, C3R and C3T. [Also in Division C1] A composition comprises an organic binder in which is intimately dispersed a particulate filler consisting essentially of Al 2 O 3 .xH 2 O (x is 1-3) and which contains #0.15% by wt. of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and # 0.05% by wt. of soluble alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The filler may also contain .<0.01% by wt. SiO 2 , <0-01% Fe 2 O 3 and <0.5% absorbed water. The filler may have a specific gravity of about 2.42 g. per c.c. and an average particle size of 6-10Á. It is preferably in the form of irregular shaped particles obtained by crushing precipitate. The filler may comprise 10-80% by wt. of filler and binder. The binder may be an epoxy resin, e.g. a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, 3,4 - epoxycyclohexylmethyl, 3,4. epoxycyclohexane carboxylate, bis - (3,4. epoxy - 6 - methylcyclohexylmethyl) adipate or bis-(2,3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether. A preferred curing agent is hexahydrophthalic anhydride optionally used in conjunction with a polyol, e.g. polycaprolactone polyol, and/or a lactone, e.g. caprolactone. All examples relate to epoxy resins. The following polymers are also referred to polyester resins, polycarbonate resins, butyl rubbers and gums, silicone rubbers and gums, polyurethane rubber, butadiene styrene rubber, butadiene acrylonitrile rubber, ABS polymers, ethylene propylene copolymers and terpolymers, polysulphone resin, polyphenylene oxide resin, polyamides, vinyl polymers and copolymers, acrylic resins, phenol- and urea-formaldehyde condensates. The compositions may be used in electrical insulators.
