Abstract
1,156,845. Casting processes. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 27 July, 1967 [16 Aug., 1966], No. 36626/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] In a process of casting steel ingots, e.g. continuous casting, the molten metal is top poured into the mould through a flux composition comprising one or more fluorides, one or more alkali metal carbonates and one or more polynuclear aromatic compounds. The fluoride may be wholly or predominantly an alkaline earth metal fluoride, e.g. calcium fluoride, and the carbonate may be sodium carbonate. The flux may further contain a polynuclear aromatic compound such as naphthalene, acenaphthalene. diphenyl, diphenylmethane, indene, fluorene, or phenanthrene; calcium oxide; and ferrosilicon. A preferred flux composition includes (percentages by weight), alkaline earth metal fluoride 25-90%, alkali metal carbonate 1-30%, alkali metal fluoride or complex fluoride 0-10%, anthracene or other polynuclear aromatic compound 0-20%, calcium oxide 0-35%, ferrosilicon 0-20%. Specific examples of flux are (1) calcium fluoride 29%, sodium carbonate 3%, sodium aluminium fluoride 7%, ferrosilicon 12%, calcium oxide 46% and anthracene 3%; (2) calcium fluoride 75%, sodium carbonate 22¢%, sodium fluoride 2¢%; and (3) calcium fluoride 77¢%, sodium carbonate 20%, anthracene 2¢%.
