Abstract

1,154,685. Mottled foamed articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 March, 1968 [24 April, 1967], No. 18778/67. Heading B5A. Articles of foamed synthetic thermoplastics material with a mottled surface are formed by charging an enlargeable mould with particles of thermoplastic material containing a heat decomposible blowing agent, the particles being of different colours, heating the mould while restraining enlargement thereof, to a temperature above the decomposition point of the blowing agent and at which the particles coalesce, allowing the mould to expand under the influence of the blowing agent and cooling the expanded mass. The thermoplastics material preferably contains a plasticized homo- or copolymer of vinyl chloride in gelled granules of 0À05 to 0À25 inches diameter and is heated to a temperature between 150‹ and 200‹ C., preferably 155-175‹ C. Other polymers which may be used are polythene, polystyrene or an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. The article formed may be used as the sole of a sandal.
