Abstract
1303517 Injection moulding foamed articles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Jan 1971 [4 Feb 1970] 5379/70 Heading B5A Articles, e.g. ribbed building panels, having a foamed thermoplastics core and an unfoamed outer skin, are produced by injecting into a mould a first charge of an unfoamable resin, followed by a second charge of a resin containing a blowing agent, the injection temperature being above that at which the blowing agent causes foaming but the injection pressure being such that foaming is prevented-retraction of one or more inserts slidable in bores in the mould wall allows the resin to expand to form ribs on the moulding; the volume of the mould cavity as a whole is then increased by, e.g. moving the mould parts away from each other. Alternatively, injection of the foamable resin may be continued during retraction of the inserts to fill the space provided by the retraction. The mould may be cooled to facilitate setting of the outer skin. The inserts may be used as an article ejecting mechanism. Materials mentioned include polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, polymethylpentene, vinyl chloride polymers, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, and fillers such as asbestos or glass fibres, or mica plates may be used. Articles mentioned include shoes, trim panels for vehicle interiors, vehicle bodies, seat pads, or chair arm rests.
