Abstract

[Also in Division G3] Apparatus for winding web material F, including warp threads, on to a beam 1 comprises a feed roller arrangement 2, 3, 4, of which the roller 4 nearest to the beam 1 is pivotally mounted about the axis 3a of the roller 3 and serves to control the winding speed so as to regulate the web tension, means being provided whereby the position of the roller 4 is adjusted during winding so that the length of the surface of the roller 4 contacted by the web, i.e. the looping angle, remains substantially constant. A pivoted arm 4c carrying the roller 4 is connected by a chain 6 to a chainwheel 8 on a shaft 7. The chainwheel 8 has a toothed rim 9 engaging a rack 10 attached to a piston 11 subjected to a constant hydraulic pressure in a cylinder 12. The shaft 7 is connected by a chain drive 15 to a regulating valve 16 through which oil under pressure may be fed to a device 27 which rotates an adjusting shaft 29 to control the drive mechanism 28 of the beam 1 so that the winding speed is controlled by movement of the roller 4. The shaft 7 carries a cam 20 to which a weight 23 is attached by a chain 22; this arrangement serves to counterbalance the weight of the roller 4 and its associated parts. To achieve the constant looping angle referred to above, a photo-electric device 24 senses the position of the web between the, roller 4 and the beam 1. The device 24 is carried on a shaft 26 movable vertically by a motor 25 controlled by the device 24 so that the device follows the web F as the web position alters with increasing diameter of the beam. Movement of the photoelectric device 24 causes a signal to be supplied by a transmitter 18 to a servomotor 17 which rotates the outer part of the valve 16 relative to the inner part to operate the device 27 so that the winding speed is reduced to allow the roller 4 to move anticlockwise to maintain the looping angle constant. The adjustment of the drive mechanism 28 may be carried out by an electric motor instead of hydraulically in which case the valve 16 is replaced by a potentiometer, the tap of which is adjusted by the chain 15 and the body of which is adjusted by the motor 17. Further, a variable speed motor may be used as the drive mechanism 28. As an alternative to the devices 18, 24, 25, 26, the adjusting shaft 29, which is rotated by the device 27 in proportion to the degree of winding of the beam, is coupled to a transmitter 34 corresponding to the transmitter 18 and connected to the adjusting motor 17.
