Abstract
1296492 Automatic tension control PAUL WEBBER A G 23 Feb 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 8606/70 Heading G3R [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for regulating the tension in a web 1 comprises first and second sets of feedrollers 2,2, a tension-sensing torsion bar 7 rigidly mounted at one end and connected to levers 6 carrying a roller 4 engaging a loop 3 in the web, and control means responsive to variations in the torsional deflection of the bar 7 for correctively controlling the speed of one set of feedrollers relative to the other set, whereby the webtension is kept constant at a desired value. As shown, any movement of the levers 6 is communicated to the feeler 8 of a device 9, e.g. a potentiometer assocated with an amplifier, which produces a corresponding signal for application to a speed control device for the feed rollers. The value at which the tension is maintained constant is determined by the design and mounting of the torsion bar 7 which may be exchangeable and by the adjustment of a knob 12 which sets the disposition of the feeler 8 relative to the lever 6. In a modification, the free end of the torsion bar is connected directly to a rotary potentiometer.
