1,153,886. Sintered metal coatings. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Sept.23, 1966 [Sept.23, 1965], No.40684/65. Heading C7D. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for depositing a coating of powder on a moving strip comprises a circumferentially grooved rotating metering roll 10 situated at the outlet of a powder container 12, means e.g. pressure plate 15, for pressing powder into the grooves, scraper means 17, 18 for removing excess powder from the surface of the roll, means e.g. blades 19, for removing the powder from the grooves and means e.g. vibrating screen 13, for breaking up the removed powder and depositing it on the strip 14. The vibrating screen 13 may be formed from a series of wires spaced apart horizontally and vertically and extending transversely of the strip, the wires forming rows, and alternated rows being offset with respect to the row above . Two banks of rows of wires may be disposed one above the other. In an alternative embodiment, the screen is formed from a series of coaxial semi-cylindrical expanded metal grids. The screen is preferably vibrated by means of a compressed air-actuated rotating ball vibrator, and is mounted for horizontal movement on ebonite members. An electric potential may be applied between the screen and the strip, the metering roll being either charged or earthed. In the case of the roll being charged, it should be maintained at a higher potential than the screen, and the screen situated nearer the strip than the roll. A vibrating plate 16 may be provided in the powder container 12 to prevent bridging of the powder, and the pressure plate 15 may be perforated to return excess powder to the container 12. The apparatus is particularly suitable for depositing metal powders e.g. aluminium, nickel, zinc, stainless steel and titanium, the powders being thereafter compacted and sintered.
