Patterning is produced on a superposed cylinder machine by having selecting stations 11, 11' at alternate feeding stations after the first of which he selected sliders and corresponding needles in the lower cylinder are elevated to a transfer height 16a of a track 16 to enable the needles to be received by the upper sliders which have been projected to level 17a in a cam track 17. The unselected sliders and needles in the lower cylinder having butts riding in track 15 and the sliders in the upper cylinder are then operated under stitch cams 19, 18 to cause their needles to take yarn from guide 20 and to knit. The selected sliders in the upper cam track 16 of the lower cylinder cam box although devoid of needles are maintained at an elevated height, and following the knitting station the upper cylinder sliders are lowered into transfer track 17e where the needles are retransferred back to the sliders at level 16e in track 16. Subsequently the lower sliders are all lowered under slider cam 22 and all the needles knit in the lower cylinder. In a multifeed machines the selection is made at alternate feeding stations to determine which needles knit in which cylinder whilst all the needles knit in the lower cylinder at the intermediate stations. The sliders of the bottom cylinder having transferred their needles to the upper cylinder remain at transfer level level until they receive the needles back again.
