An air conditioner hood for mounting above cookers comprises a casing within which is located a centrifugal fan 11 drawing air from an inlet (12, Fig. 1) in the bottom of the casing and projecting it horizontally along a fan outlet duct 16. The exhausted air is released through either a front opening 25 to recirculate within the kitchen, or through a rear aperture 21 or 22 to the atmosphere. A selector valve, which directs the air to the desired outlet, comprises a plate 17 of aluminium or phenolic laminated paper, pivotable about a vertical axis 29, movable by a push-pull rod 34 and held in either position by a spring 36. A non-return flap valve 40 may be located in the fan outlet 16. The incoming air passes through a greaseremoving filter (15, Fig. 1) and air for recirculation is filtered by an activated charcoal odourremoving filter (24, Fig. 1) located between the fan outlet and the recirculation opening 25, or a source of ultra-violet light may be included to decompose or oxidize noxious products in the air for recirculation. Alternative forms of selector valve comprise a rotatable fan easing (50, Fig. 5) or a length of ducting (57, Figs. 6-9) the latter having an inlet opening and an outlet opening perpendicular thereto and being rotatable about an axis perpendicular to and through the centre of the inlet opening.
