Abstract
1,146,055. Electromagnetic forming. NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION. 2 May, 1966 [4 May, 1965], No. 19223/66. Headings B3Q and B3W. A portable electromagnetic forming head for metal working, blanking &c. operations comprises a forming coil 13, a pair of conductors 65, 87 connected to the coil, a block 59 of insulation between the conductors and the coil, and means 47, 115 for clamping the parts to form a rigid assembly. Adjacent convolutions of the copper-beryllium coil are insulated from each other by a strip of insulating material and may be formed with apertures for non-conductive support rods 37. Alternatively, the insulation may be moulded into slots in the coil. The contact plate 65 engages screwthreads 63 on an outer conductor 41 connected to the coil and has a rib 67 engaging a recess 93 in the terminal plate 87 to which are connected the central tubular conductors 109 of co-axial power cables 25. The outer, tubular conductors of the cables are connected to a top plate 101 against which bears the clamping nut 115 that engages the screwthreaded, central conductor 47. Surrounding the outer, annular conductor 41 is an insulating sleeve, and a stainless-steel clamp 77, 79. A layer of insulation 81, e.g. polyurethane, is moulded over the end of the coil and flows between the coil turns and the insulating strip 35. A yoke (119), Fig. 4 (not shown), fixed to the forming head by screws (127), may be used to clamp the head to a workpiece (121) by means of bars (141) operated by pneumatic cylinders (135) and slidable on guides (133). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 896, 923.
