Abstract

1,144,192. Nonwoven fabrics. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 8 Feb., 1966 [9 Feb., 1965], No. 5548/66. Heading DIR. The binder in a mat or shaped element of glass or mineral wool comprises a phenolformaldehyde resin and boric anhydride, boric acid, a borate salt or an aromatic borate ester, but no colloidal silicic acid. The mat or shaped article is made by wetting the glass or mineral wool either with the phenol-formaldehyde resin followed by the boron compound, or with a mixture of the two, and then hardening the resin without foaming. The phenol-formaldehyde resin binder may also contain colophony. Specific boron compounds referred to are: orthoboric acid, metaboric acid, ammonium borate, sodium borate, phenyl borate, cresyl borate and xylenyl borate. Polyborate esters and mixtures of esters are also referred to. In the example, the binder is a mixture of phenol resin, ammonium hydroxide, natural resin, ammonium acetate, ammonium sulphate, water and sodium tetraborate.
