Abstract

1,143,406. Processing yarns; twist stoppers. ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd. 18 March, 1966 [27 Feb., 1965], No. 8542/65. Headings DID and D1F. The twist inserted in a yarn e.g. the false twist inserted in a crimping process, is prevented from running back to the supply means by a twist stopper comprising spaced apart walls. In Fig. 3 the yarn is passed between the opposed surfaces 23, 23<SP>1</SP> of a slot the depth of which is at least twice the diameter of the filaments in the yarn. In Fig. 4, not shown, the surfaces are formed in a closed curved channel of rectangular cross section. In Fig. 6, not shown the surfaces are formed by spaced parallel rods (43, 43<SP>1</SP>) e.g. of synthetic sapphire. Two such arrangements may be provided in series along the yarn. In Fig. 8 the surfaces are formed on annular recesses 53, 53<SP>1</SP> in a pair of rotating rollers. The recessed portions may be provided at one end of the roller pair to facilitate threading up. The surfaces may be movable relative to each other and be provided with micrometer means to adjust the separation thereof. In Fig. 3 one of the surfaces may be stepped so that paths with different wall separation are provided. The surfaces may be movable apart to facilitate threading. The entrance and exit to the opposed walls are preferably tapering. In Fig. 9, not shown, the twist stopper is formed by a hole (25) in a plate. A series of holes of varying diameters is provided for different yarns. Elliptical or polygonal holes may be provided. In Fig. 11, not shown, the twist stopper is formed by a tube (61) preferably having belled ends. In use with false twist crimping apparatus the twist stopper may be flared in the heating zone.
