Abstract

1,143,083. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 May, 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 22128/65. Heading HiN. The fixed contact 4 of a vacuum switch is mounted on a deformable wall portion 11 of the evacuated envelope allowing for adjustment of the contact separation to allow for wear or for differential expansion produced by the ambient temperature. The wall portion 11 is given a circular corrugation so that it is rigid enough not to be deformed by atmospheric pressure. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) the deformable wall portion 16 is not itself strong enough to resist atmospheric pressure but is prevented from collapsing by a nut (21) threaded to a sleeve (20) attached to the fixed contact stem, the nut engaging with a rigid plate (22) and being adjustable to set the position of the contact (4).
