Abstract
1,136,090. Door latches. CRYSLER CORP. 28 Dec., 1965 [30 Dec., 1964; 2 July, 1965], No. 54970/65. Heading E2A. A mechanism for latching a swinging member e.g. a door to a fixed member comprises a bolt having first and second faces which are engageable by first and second detents when the first and second faces move past the detents during closing movement of the door only the first face intersects the path of movement of the first detent and only the second face intersects the path of movement of the second detent. A latching device comprises a bolt 24 rotatable on a pin 26 and having a recess which as the door closes engages a fixed striker which rotates the bolt and slides along a resiliently mounted ramp 36 which yields to hold the striker in the recess. The bolt comprises two coaxially aligned plates rivetted together. One plate has the recess and each plate is provided with a radial face 40, 42 engageable consecutively by arms 43, 45 of detents 44, 46 coaxially pivoted on pin 54 and spring urged to hold the latch in either safety latching or fully latching position. As the detents move from the periphery of the bolt to engage the faces 40, 42, one arm of each detent engages a resilient pad 74 to dampen the movement and ensure quiet lock operation. The bolt is released from the detents by an outside push button 80 which is linked to a lever 85 pivoting on pin 54 and having one arm secured to a lever 88, also pivoting on pin 54. The lever 88 has a tab 90 which engages tabs 91 and 92 on detent arms 72, 73, and rotates the detents from engagement with the bolt. The bolt is also released from inside the door by raising a lever which has a portion 98 which engages surfaces on the detents to pivot them out of engagement with the bolt. A locking lever 100 pivoted on pin 26 has tabs 106, 108 which block movement of an arm 111 on detent 46 and an arm 110 on lever 88 to prevent their movement to releasing position. The locking lever may be pivoted to inoperative or operative position by raising or lowering the push button 115 connected to one end of the lever. The locking lever is also rendered inoperative or operative by a key lock 124 connected to the other end of the lever. The inside releasing lever overrides the locking lever by engaging a tang with a tab 114 on the lever 100 and rotating the lever 100 to inoperative position. The locking lever cannot be moved to the operative position when the latch is in the safety latching position since the arm 111 of detent 46 blocks movement of the lever to locking position unless the latch is fully latched.
