Abstract

113,565. Petithory, E. A. July 6, 1917. Telephones, mounting and supporting.-The unintentional operation of the hook or cradle switch of a telephone is prevented by the employment of a delay device between the operating lever and the switch contacts. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1<a>, a cradle stem c is moved upwards through a conical block e by the action of a spring d when the telephone is removed from the cradle. The stem c is provided with a pin o adapted to engage projections t s, on a disk m between which the pin o lies when the stem c is depressed. The disk m is also provided with pins q, r which are adapted to engage an arm p resting on the block e. The disk m is controlled by a spring n which gives the disk a rapid movement as the spring passes over the dead-centre. Normally, the block e is depressed by the arm p and in this position causes the contacts f, h and i, k to be in engagement. When the telephone is removed, the pin o engages the projection s and rotates the disk m until the spring n passes over the dead-centre, when the disk m is given a rapid movement and the pin q engaging the arm p allows the block c to rise under the resilience of the contacts h, k to close the contacts h, g and k, j. When the telephone is replaced, the reverse action takes place. In the modification shown in Fig. 2<a>, the contact h is directly operated by the arm p, the position of which is controlled by a rotary member m carrying pins q, v adapted to engage the arm p, and projections s, t adapted to be engaged, by a projection o on the stem c. In the modification shown in Fig. 3<a>, the position of a member w is controlled by the telephone hook and a spring d. A pin o on the member w engages a recess in the disk m, the rotation of which controls the position of the contact h through the arm p. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the stem c is connected to bell-crank levers p by springs n. The arms of the levers p bear upon contact levers h and the arrangement is such that, when the springs pass below the line joining the pivots x, the levers h are given a rapid movement. In the modification shown in Fig. 5<a>, a conical block c is slidably mounted on the stem c between collars s, t. When the telephone is removed from its cradle, the collar s, which normally engages the top of the block c, leaves the latter and finally the collar t engages the block to raise it, thereby operating the contacts h, k.
