Abstract

1,134,690. Grippers for lifting rolls of paper. CASCADE CORP. 13 Nov., 1967 [19 June, 1967], No. 51639/67. Heading B8H. In a fork-lift truck attachment for lifting rolls of paper which has arms 14, 16, the movement of the arm 16 towards the load is slowed down at a predetermined point in its travel so that the arm 14 contacts the load first. This arrangement ensures that the arm 16, which is able to exert the greater pressure, still has some movement left after the arm 14 has been arrested, thereby allowing the full grip to be applied. To prevent the arm 16 pushing the arm 14 backwards, a check-valve is provided in the hydraulic circuit to the operating ram for the arm 14, Fig. 4 (not shown). The cam 14 is suspended by pivoted links 52, 76, and moves faster than the arm 16 for the same ram movement. To provide retardation of the arm 16 near the end of its movement, the operating ram 22, Fig. 3, has a piston 122 with a skirt 136 with an oil-seal 140 and an oil-passage 142. As the piston is moved to the left in Fig. 3 by oil under pressure admitted through a conduit 128, oil is exhausted through a conduit 126. When the oil seal 140 passes over the conduit 126 oil can only be exhausted at a reduced rate through the passage 142. Movement of oil in the opposite direction is not retarded as a passage 146 with a check-valve 148 is provided.
