Abstract
1,128,829. Retractable undercarriages. RECHERCHES ETUDES PRODUCTION R.E.P. 20 July, 1966 [22 July, 1965], No. 32609/66. Heading B7G. A retractable undercarriage has the mounting linkage designed so that on retraction the length of the undercarriage leg is first reduced and then lengthened causing the wheel 2 to follow the locus S instead of the arc S<SP>1</SP> to clear an obstacle C. The link 3 carrying the wheel is in turn carried by a tube 5 rotatably, but not axially slidably mounted in a casing 6 carried by the aircraft. The link 3 is also connected to the casing 6 by a shock-absorber 7 and a lever 10 pivoted together at 9. The undercarriage is held in the " lowered " position by a brace comprising two parts 14, 15, pivoted together at 19, joints 16, 19, 18 of the brace being in line as are joints 12, 9, 8 of the shock-absorber 7 thereby leaving link 20 unstressed. To retract the undercarriage the brace is bent at its joint 19 (e.g. by a jack 23) pushing link 20, turning lever 10, withdrawing the shock-absorber 7 and the wheel 2. The wheel 2 is withdrawn during undercarriage retraction, until links 15 and 20 come into line, after which the wheel is pushed out again. The links may be suitably proportioned so that the undercarriage leg has the same length when " fully retracted " as when "fully lowered." The jack 23 may have a lock to keep links 14 and 15 held in line when the undercarriage is lowered.
