Abstract
1,126,243. Sorting machines. B. H. BUNN CO. 26 Oct., 1966 [14 Sept., 1966], No. 48130/66. Heading G4M. Envelopes bearing a column of code bits are fed from a stack to a pair of rollers which are inclined to the vertical so as to impart free flight to each envelope, the free flight taking place between a pair of converging guide walls and terminating on a reference surface which serves to align the envelopes with a reading station. On detection of the leading edge of an envelope by a photo-cell, circuit 112 resets flip-flops 107-111 and gates in the code bits from reading photo-cells 97-101. The sorting pockets are divided into groups M1 to M3, each group comprising several pairs of pockets, one pocket on each side of the envelope path. The first bank of flip-flops 107-111 control the solenoid drivers 113-118 for the first group of pockets M1 through decoding AND gates, but should an envelope be destined for a pocket in group M2 or M3, none of drivers 113-118 is actuated, and on arrival at the beginning of group M2, the envelope is detected by a further photocell and circuit 119 transfers the code bits to a second bank of flip-flops 120-124 controlling the solenoid drivers of the second group M2. Similarly, if the envelope is destined for group M3, circuit 132 enables the third group of decoder AND gates on arrival of the envelope at the group M3 to set the appropriate one of power flip-flops 133-138.
