Abstract
1,124,192. Insoles. J. ANTELL. 14 July, 1965 [16 Sept., 1964; 4 Feb., 1965], No. 29966/65. Heading A3B. A method of making a shoe comprises placing an auxiliary sole on a last, laying an insole over the auxiliary sole and releasably attaching it to a portion only thereof, and attaching the margins of a lasted upper to the insole. A later removal of all or part of the auxiliary sole adapts the size of the shoe to, fit the foot. In the shoe shown in Fig. 7 the auxiliary sole 30 is coated with pressure-sensitive or contact-actuated adhesive on both pairs and protected by backers 31, 32, and has a skived uncovered rear margin by which it is attached to the shoe between the insole 33 and sock 37. Depending on the fit of the shoe the backers are removed and the auxiliary sole stuck to the insole and sock, or the auxiliary sole is removed and the insole and sock stuck together. Alternatively a heat or solvent actuated adhesive may be used. The auxiliary sole may cover the forepart only, or may be full length. Fig. 14 illustrates a multi-layer sole with backers 53-56, tapered upward margins 50a, 51a, 52a, and the sole layers graduated in width and length with layer 50 the smallest. One, or more, or all the layers 50, 51, 52-may be removed. The upper surface of the auxiliary sole may be finished in the manner of a sock lining. An auxiliary sole for shoes having a pronounced arch comprises layers shaped to a last bottom and skived at the front and rear margins which are later attached to the insole. For use with shoes having pointed toes the layers are cut short at the front. The soles may be blanked out from a continuous strip formed of a strip 85, Fig. 22, of leather &c. skived at both edges, a layer 86 of double-faced adhesive tape, and a backer 87, and moulded to the shape of a last bottom.
