Abstract

1,2-Dicyanocyclobutane is made by the dimerization of acrylonitrile at 200-400 DEG C. under pressure after addition to the acrylonitrile of 0.1-30% by weight of an ester of a carboxylic acid or an ester of an inorganic acid. The specified carboxylic acid esters include esters of aliphatic and aromatic mono-and di-carboxylic acids. Trimethyl and triethyl borate are specified esters of inorganic acids. Examples describe the use of dibutyl phthalate and ethyl acetate. The reaction mixture may include a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, ammonia or water.
