1,204,730. Reacting diene polymers with unsaturated carbonyl compounds. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 24 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 3865/70. Divided out of 1,204,729. Heading C3P. A solution of a synthetic conjugated diene polymer in a solvent comprising 1 to 100% w. of one or more monoolefinic hydrocarbons is modified by reaction with an anhydride or imide of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. The preferred compounds are maleic anhydride and N-phenyl- and N-C 22 -alkylmaleimide. The reaction may be promoted by the use of free radical initiators, e.g. peroxides and azo compounds.
