Abstract

1,121,611. Boring earth &c. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. 11 Aug., 1965, No. 32687/64. Heading E1F. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] An assembly includes a bearing one end of which is sealed from an ambient space and the other end communicates with a lubricant reservoir, the reservoir being formed with a flexible wall which acts to maintain the pressure of the lubricant in the reservoir and hence in the bearing higher than that of the ambient space. In the earth boring bit of Fig. 1B lubricant is initially supplied through nipple 45 to fill the cavities of bearings 23, 24, 25, passage 37 and probe 44, a previously filled lubricant reservoir 32 is positioned in a space 33, and part 13 is then screwed in position so that probe 44 lifts ball valve 43 and allows lubricant to flow to the bearings. The lubricant in the reservoir is pressurised both by drilling fluid passing through gating 49 and passage 50 to space 33, and by the resiliency of the reservoir walk which are initially corrugated. The passage 50 and space 33 may contain thin grease to prevent entry of debris. In Fig. 7 (not shown) drilling fluid is supplied to passage 33 directly from nozzle (17).
