LUBRICATOR FOR ROCK DRILLS. APPLICATION FILED APILZI. 1915.
.Husum WLMI/ww 5 9 cwi XVILLIAM H. LEONARD AND OMAR E.l CLARK,
OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNORS TO THE DENVER ROCK DRILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY.VOF DENVER, COLORADO,
A. CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
LUBRICATOR FOR ROCK-DRILLS.
Application filed April 27, 1915. Serial No. 24,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, lVILLLnI H. LEON- .-\1n and (hun E. CLARK, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the.,
county ot' Denver and State of'Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Rock-Drills7 of which the Following is a specification. v
The present invention relates particularly to means for lubricating the movable parts of a motor. and especially a rock drill, and the object is to provide improved means wherebyv the lubricant will be effectively vaporized and delivered by the motive Huld to ail parts of the machine.
An embodiment of the invention that has proven satisfactory, is illustrated in the ac# companying drawings, wherein:-
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a rock drill, showing the improved lubricator in place therein. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. l andon an enlarged scale. F ig. is a detail sectional View at right angles to Fig. 2. l
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
ln the embodiment disclosed. the motor includes'a cylinder' member which comprises a barrel #t and a rear head ln Vthe barrel is a reciprm-atory piston having an internal constant. pressure chamber 'i' and a reduced forwardly extending hammer section S that operates upon a drill bit f). This drill bit is placed in a chuck l() which is rotated from the piston by suitable mechanism. indicated at ll. rl`he fluid undenplessure delivered to the constant pressure chamber 7 is distributed to opposite ends ot' the piston b v suitable ports l2 and tbe reduced hammer extension S. has a` conduit or channel lil for delivering a portion of the lluid `to the bore IlV ot' thi-drill bit. Jr'or the purpose of cleansing the drill hole.
lnterposcd between the barrel -l and the head 5 is a lubricant reservoir designated 'generally by the reference nmueral 15'. said reservoir having end walls lf3 and i7 aud outer and inner tubular walls IS and if) forming a lubricant holding chamber "30. l-`xtending through the inner tubular wall from the rear had is a supply tube 21 for Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. et, 19t
Huid under pressure, said tube .projecting Into the constant pressure chamber T, and
.receiving the Huid supply by means of a `channel 22 communicating with the rear end of the tube and also in communication with a suitable coupling Q3 by which a hose connected with any suitable source of Huid under pressure lnay be attached to the machine.
It will he noted that a portion of the inner tubular wall 19'is spaced from the tube 2l forming an annular pocket in which is placed a body of absorbent material 24. such as wicking or the like. A plurality of annular rows of ports 25 are formed in the inner Wall 19, and thus afford communication between the lubricant holding chamber 20 and the pocket. Arrow of ports 2G is formed in the rear end ofthe tube 21 extending forwardly and outwardly and being in communication with the rear end of the pocket that-holds the absorbent material 24. One or more additional ports 2T in advance of the ports, 2G are formed in the'tube 2l and also communicate with the pocket. Access to' the lubricant holding chamber 2O is secured through 'a port 28 normally closed by a removable plug 29 and a cylindrical screen 30 may be placed in the lnner portion of ,theunotive fluid in the constant pressure chamber and the supply tube 21 due to the rapid backward and forward movement of the piston. This rise and fall et' the pressure causes the pulsation of the air through the two sets of channels or ports between the tube Q1 and the lubricant holding chamber 20. The pulsation of duid intoand out ot' the. chamber 2O tends to vaporize the oil. so that a uniformsupply of lubricant permeates every part of the drilling mechanism. Demonstration has shown that the rotating mechanism is thoroughl)7 lubricated as is the piston. and that such is not the case it' the lubricant is introduced in liquid form.
From the foregoing` it is thought that the construction, operation'4 and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. without further description.,.nul it will be understood that v arious changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details ot' con- Letters Patent, is 1- y l, in apparatus-0f the character set forth, 'he combination with a motor comprising a cylinder member and a piston operating therein, of a lubricant reservoir havingran 'nner and an outer wali, a Huid supply conriu for the motor extending alongside the inn nll, an absorbent element interposed. Ween the Wall and lconduit, vand ports be through said wall and Yconduit at said element. Y
2. En apparatus of the characterset forth, the combination with a motor comprising a cylinder member and) a piston operating therein., of a lubricant reservoir having an inner and an outer Wall, a Huid supply conduit Vfor the motor extending alongside the inner wall, an absorbent element interposed between the Wall and conduit, and angu I larly disposed ports through said Wall and v conduit at said elementt ln apparatus ofthe characterset forth, the conibination with a motory comprising a cylinder member and .a piston operating therein, of a supply conduit for 'said motor, a lubricant reservoir surrounding the conduit, and a body of absorbent material interposed between the reservoir and supply conduit, said reservoir having-ports leading to the absorbent material, and said conduit hav' g morts leading from therlbsorbent niateriai.
si. In apparatus of the characteriset faith. the combination Witlfa motor comprisingV a cylinder member and a iston o ratinv therein, of a supply conduit for said'motbr, a hibrieant reservoir"v surrounding the con duit, and a body of absorbent material in terposed between the reservoir and supply mamie ent material located in the pocket, sain inner Wall and conduit having ports coinmunicating withthe pocket.
6. In apparatus oi the character set forth, the combination with a cylinder member comprising abarrel and a rear head, of a piston-operating in the cylinder member and having an internal constant pressure chamber, means for distributing 'iuid under pressure therefrom, a lubricant reservoir interposed between the barrel and head and having an outer and an inner tubular Wall,
a. supply tube for fluid under pressure ex.-
tending from the rear head through the inner wall and into the constant pressure chamber, said inner wall and tube having portions spaced apart forming a pocket, and
a body of absorbent materiallocated in the pocket, said inner-Wall and tube having sets of ports, the ports in the tube being disposed at different points longitudinally along said tube.
