Abstract

836,261. Rectilinear - motion bearings. BAYLISS, D. W. Nov. 21, 1957, No. 36266/57. Class 12 (1). A rectilinear-motion bearing between a body 1 and a shaft 5 comprises a plurality of endless ball tracks, each of which is formed by an operative run 7 between a bush 4 and the shaft 5 and a return inoperative run 9 through a passage 10 in the body 1, the ends of the runs being connected through curved passageways 11 in the inner faces of end caps 2 secured to the body 1. The balls 6 are guided during their operative runs 7 by shaped rods 19, which retain the balls when the shaft 5 is removed, having ends 16 mounted in the end caps 2. The balls 6 are preferably preloaded during their operative runs 7. Lubricant seals 23 are mounted in grooves 24 in the end caps 2. In a modification, the bush 4 is omitted and the balls run directly between a bore 3<SP>1</SP> in a body 1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, and the shaft 5. In a further modification, the endless ball tracks are carried by a body 31 secured to a shaft 30 and are adapted to co-operate with the bore 35 of a tubular member 351.
