Abstract

An unsaturated steroid the carbon nucleus of which includes the arrangement <FORM:1120495/C2/1> where n is 1 or 2, is obtained in a process in which an unsaturated steroid starting material the carbon nucleus of which includes the arrangement <FORM:1120495/C2/2> where n is 1 or 2 is subjected to the action of oxygen in an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a cupric salt and in the presence of an aromatic amine and a tri-alkylamine. The aliphatic alcohol may be provided by methanol, ethanol, n-propanol or isopropanol, and the cupric salt by a mineral acid salt, and organic acid salt or a chelate. Suitable starting compounds are 17a -ethynyl-17b -hydroxy - estr - 5(10) - en - 3 - one; 13b - ethyl 17a - ethynyl - 17b - hydroxy - gon - 5(10) - en - 3 - one; 13b - n - propyl - 17a - ethynyl - 17b - hydroxy - gon - 5(10) - 3 - one; cholest - 5 - en - 3 - one; estra - 5(10),9(11) - diene - 3,17 - dione or 17a - ethynyl - 17b - hydroxy - estra - 5(10),-9(11) -diene-3-one.
