Abstract

The invention comprises 3,3-alkylene-dioxy-11 - oxo - 3,17 - seco - 5,12 - androstadien - 17-oic acid wherein the alkylene moiety has 2 or 3 carbon atoms, 17-alkyl estesr thereof wherein the alkyl radical has 1-10 carbon atoms, 3,3-alkylenedioxy - 17 - hydroxy - 18 - nor - D-homo - 5,12,17 - androstatrien - 11 - one, 3,3-alkylenedioxy - 17a hydroxy - 18 - nor - D - homo - 5,12 - androstadien - 11 - one and processes for the preparation thereof by treating 3,3 - alkylenedioxy - 17a - aza - D - homo - 5-androstene-11, 17-dione with an alkaline substance to produce 3,3 alkylenedioxy-11-oxo-13, 17 - seco - 5,12 - androstadien - 17 - oic acid, esterifying this compound with diazoalkane to obtain the corresponding 17-ester, treating the 17-ester with alkali metal alkoxide in an inert organic solvent while heating to obtain 3,3-alkylenedioxy - 17 - hydroxy - 18 - nor - D-homo - 5,12,17 - androstatrien - 11 - one, and treating this compound with a metallic hydride to obtain 3,3-alkylenedioxy-17a -hydroxy - 18 - nor - D - homo - 5,12 - androstadien-11-one.
