Abstract
1,114,780. Paper and like bags &c. H.J.B. PLASTICS Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 53802/65. Heading B8K. [Also in Division F2] Tubes, formed in opposed side edges of a sleeve of thermoplastics packaging material, can retain a stiffener strip which supports the side of the sleeve when formed into a container. The tube may be formed by sealing together the external edges of a gusset fold in the side of the sleeve, as shown in Fig. 4 or by laying flattened tubes between opposed sheets 10, Fig. 5, and severing and sealing the tubes and sheets together along the axial centre line of the tubes. In the embodiment, cardboard stiffener strips (14), Fig. 6 (not shown), are slid into the side tubes 12 to form sidewalls of a container. A projection (22) of thermoplastics material is folded along the outside of the container and is passed through a hole 24 in the stiffener and welded to the inside of the tube 12 and to retain the siffener. A hot knife passing between chilled rollers may be used to seal and sever the tubes in the method of Fig. 5. This method may be utilized to form several containers at the same time by inserting several tubes between the opposed sheets.
