Abstract

1,110,302. Pressure exchangers; gas turbine engines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. June 17, 1966, No. 27149/66. Headings F1G and F1N. Driven rotor vanes 27, Fig. 3, of a pressure exchanger are curved in the direction of rotation 29 at ends 40 adjacent a fixed wall 30 having alternate ports 34, 35 for admitting air at high-pressure and discharging it at a higher pressure; the opposite ends of the cells being closed by a fixed wall 31 having alternate ports 32, 33 for admitting hot high-pressure combustion gas and discharging it at a lower pressure. Each air inlet port 34 is inclined in the direction of cell rotation and air enters the cells in an effective direction 44 thereby houving a component opposite to the direction of cell rotation and so impinges against the curved ends 40 of the rotor vanes and is thereby precompressed. The hot gas inlet 32 is also inclined in the direction of cell rotation and its effective entry is along a line 38 houving a component in the direction of cell rotation thereby assisting their rotation. High-pressure inlet air is provided by rotary compressors 11, 12, 13, Fig. 1, of a jet engine of the by-pass type. Compressed air from outlet 35 is fed to a combustion chamber 22, hot gases therefrom are fed to inlets 32 and gases leaving outlets 33 are fed to turbines 15, 16 which drive the cell rotor and compressors 11, 12, 13.
